Variety reports that Universal Pictures has picked up the rights to "Dog On It: A Chet and Bernie Mystery." Jeff Lowell ("Hotel for Dogs") will pen the screenplay.

The story tells of a private eye who sets off to solve a missing persons case. He's accompanied by his dog Chet and the story is told from his vantage point.

New Line and Summit also made attempts to nab the film rights.
