"I am a better actor for having to have to create both sides of the sea with no dialogue."

If you’re ready to be scared and on the edge of your seat, then “I Am Legend” starring Will Smith is just the film for you.  Will Smith plays Robert Neville, a man who believes he is the last surviving human after a worldwide epidemic wiped out nearly the entire human population. Every day, he sends out a signal, hoping to find another surviving human. But he must quickly head home when the sun sets, as the world has now been taken over by a society of vampire-like creatures.

We spoke with Will Smith at a press conference in L.A. for some insight on the movie and what his plans are for the future.

Q: How was shooting the movie in New York?

WILL:  It was difficult.  Shooting in New York was the most amount of middle fingers I have ever received.  I started to believe my name was FU.  We shut down 6 blocks of 5th Ave on a Monday morning.  It was probably poor planning.  It was chilling to walk down an empty 5th Ave. This gave the movie an eerie and creepy feeling. This is something that could not have been done with the green screen.

Q: How significant do you believe the last man alive is an African American?

WILL:  First and the last baby!! I rarely think about that until someone brings it up. It never crossed my mind in that way. The acknowledgements of those thoughts put a weird boundary on my thoughts.

Q: What it difficult being by yourself?

WILL:  You start to create stimulus and the responses.  You learn things about yourself that you never would have known.  We sat with former POW’s and other people who had been in solitary confinement for the framework.  They taught that the first thing you need is a schedule.  You have to plan things like cleaning your nails.  One guy who was in solitary confinement told us he trained roaches to bring him food. When playing Robert Neville, mental space did not matter!  What mattered was what he saw and what he believed.  This was the great exploration of human want. I am a better actor for having to have to create both sides of the sea with no dialogue.

Everyone wishes at times that everyone on the freeway would die and we would just be left alone.  How would we far against the unknown? People dream similar dreams, nightmares about being alone.  This film represents unknown fear and hope.

Q: What would you do in the same position as Robert Neville?

WILL:  I don’t know.  I don’t know what there would be to live for.  I don’t want to be tested.

Q: What are your thoughts on Scientology?

WILL:  I don’t believe in organized religion. I grew up in a baptized household, went to a catholic church, lived in a Jewish neighborhood and had the biggest crush on a Muslim girl in the neighborhood over.

Tom (Cruise) introduced me to the ideas.  I am a student of world religions.  To me, it’s highly important to have knowledge to understand what people are doing.  I believe my connection to a higher power is separate from everybody’s.  I don’t believe Muslims, Catholic and Jews have all the answers.  I create my connection and how it’s going to be.

Q: Your daughter Willow was in the movie.  What made her get into acting?

WILL:  My son Jaden is like Johnny Depp because he doesn’t care about money. He just wants to work.  Willow is like Paris Hilton. She just wants to be on TV all the time and loves clothes.

Q: How do your children stay grounded?

WILL:  NY and LA are lala land.  So traveling is important. It gets them to experience on how other people live. It shows them how you can serve man kind.  You are part of a whole and you have responsibility to uplift and be a positive influence on the whole.

Q: How was working with Abbey (dog) in the movie?

WILL:  She was smart, fun, and warm.  I didn’t want to connect with a dog since my dog Trixie was hit by a car and died when I was 9 years old.  So I never allowed myself to make a connection with another dog.  I did offer to buy Abbey from her owner because I made such a connection with her.  But her owner said, "no this is how I make my living. " He also told me he would bring her by on weekends.  Needless to say my heart was broken again.

Q: What is your next project?

WILL:  My next movie is ‘Hancock” with Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman and directed by Peter Berg.  It’s by Michael Mann about an alcoholic Superhero. It’s a dramatic film.
