Could another "Gladiator" save Dreamworks from their reported financial
troubles? Well, it would have to actually happen. While speaking at the press junket for "The Island," producer Walter
Parkes told us that plans for a "Gladiator 2" doesn't seem like it's
going to happen anymore, despite screenwriter John Logan and director Ridley
Scott reportedly drafting a screenplay. "That's one - unlike "The Ring," which is a good pop movie
but not an Academy Award winning [film] - you're only going to make a 'Gladiator
2' only if it's absolutely fantastic. We had a really great story and we got
really close, but we could not get the script quite to a point where we all
felt 'this is worth it,' vis a vis, our love for the first one." Another Dreamworks franchise, however, will be having another sequel, as Parkes
and his wife and partner, Laurie MacDonald, revealed that there will most likely
be a "Ring 3." Says MacDonald, "We're doing a lower budget, almost
going back to a original in a way. Not in story, but in scale." As for another franchise the power couple have worked on in the past, Parkes
reveals that discussions about resurrecting the "Men in Black" franchise
have taken place as well. "There's been some conversations, just recently
actually, because I don't think we did the best possible job on the second one.
It would be great to pull the franchise back."
